DE VRIJE STEM 1916

Out of stock

Original clandestine Belgian newspaper printed in 1916 and published in Antwerp. It is in very good condition.

Under the slogans "Neither Fleming nor Walloon but Belgian" and "Eternally loyal to the Royal House," the first issue of *De Vrije Stem* appeared in 1915. The last issue was published as no. 94 of the 4th volume on 19 December 1918. The newspaper carried the subtitle "Belgian organ for the province of Antwerp" and was illegal under German censorship. Anyone caught in possession of it could be punished with a prison sentence of one year. After the liberation in November 1918, it was announced that the newspaper had been printed at the printing house of Jozef Buerbaum in Antwerp and that L. Riflaert and E.G. Lava were responsible for its distribution. After Buerbaum was arrested on 4 August 1916, his son Ernest, Gustaaf Lava, and Richard van Hemeldonck continued the publication of the newspaper. As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
